Obviously hyperbole, but anyone living in a major city will see lots of people walking around with $1k Canada Geese, Monclers, Moose Knuckles, Parajumper, Mackage, Nobis, etc parkas.

Is the demographic that I'm around just flush with disposable income?
Are they using all their income and dropping it on expensive jackets?

Are they buying knockoffs?

This message brought to you by Canada goose jackets.

I don’t know much about them, but I’d assume people pay for a quality item because even though it’s expensive, it lasts. And in northern large metros, the winter is no joke, so it’s a decision of function as well.

Back in the 1990s I bought all my north face gear ….people thought I was nuts spending 1k on a vortex shell , down liner , fleece pants and vortex shell pants .

This was pre Columbia buying them ..north face was a high end small company that catered to mountain climbers .

I did a lot of winter camping and hunting .

Well today I still have it all in use

Or sneakers , beer or even lottery tickets in such quantities…….

Don’t forget in many areas they are not as poor as they seem as the trillion dollar under ground economy has many with higher incomes then many with far better incomes and jobs

I have wondered this myself a few years ago. My DH bought me one a few years ago, i never would have bought it myself.

I guess more people might have one these days thanks to stimulus money or money they saved from not doing other things like going out to eat and taking vacations.

Really? Atlanta's a major city. So are Dallas and LA. Do people wear down parkas designed for northern winters there?

Monclers are definitely overpriced, I don't know about the rest. About 98% of Monclers I've seen in online vendors are ugly. The last batch I saw were plain black. I don't understand the cachet. A few years ago they had a nice floral women's short jacket. (I always wonder what the point is in making a winter jacket only waist length.) That's the only attractive one I've ever seen.

But isn't the generation that's buying these, the same one that's living in their parents' basement? I lived in a neighborhood with a lot of 3-generation households awhile ago. One of the young adults was literally living in the basement, and he owned a Jaguar sports car. This tells you something about both parental and Millennial priorities.

Maybe they're the new equivalent of fur coats. Since those became un-PC long ago, a new winter status symbol has evolved?
