Anyone else sick of these coats? I've never seen so many since moving to Toronto, it seems every second person is wearing one. What I find really interesting are the families that are completely decked out in them, including the kids who will outgrow it after one season.
I understand the desire to dress well and appear fashionable and to splurge a bit on yourself. But these jackets cost waaaaay more than what most common folk would or should pay for an adequate winter coat. Either everyone is rich, or everyone is running up some serious debt to try and impress...who? I don't know anyone who thinks they look good, mostly drab parkas that remind me of the cheapies we wore as kids back in the 70s (navy shell with orange or white fluff on the lining and hood).
Yes, I know the coats are high-quality and well-crafted, but is there really a need for such a high-end item if you are not planning an arctic expedition? And I wonder--would all these people buy the jacket if it didn't have the logo on the sleeve to tell everyone you paid almost $1000 for a parka?
When I was in high-school back in the 80's, the big thing was Far West jackets (Gore-Tex!). They cost a few hundred bucks so I guess it is the same thing. But I will be glad when the warmer weather comes and these jackets go back in the closet. Only to be replaced by the Spring fad, I guess.
My God those are expensive. Are there any knock offs that are warm? How much does the coat weigh. If it's warm and light weight it would be ideal for Chicago weather but not for $650.

I bought a Banana Republic down jacket for $200 and it feels warm with -25 windchill with nothing but a shirt inside. The only part I feel cold is my face. And it is pretty light and compact.
No, a winter jacket is never worth $650. Don't jump for the bandwagen unless you are loaded.
