I think you are absolutely correct. Most of the posters on this thread seem to be far more responsible than the average U.S. citizen. We're just not hearing from the average person out there. If I were buried beneath the debt situation of many of my neighbors, I sure wouldn't have any interest in posting my painful situation on this thread for the world to see.

Just under $1 million dollars which includes my first brand new vehicle (still owe 12K) which was a major splurge for me, I usually drive rust buckets. 31 years old. Oh, should probably state the type of debt... investment properties (all cash flow - I love passive income) and a primary home - all bought before the housing market went crazy.

Zero debt!

Bought my 05 Hyundai with cash, pay my credit cards off every month, and rent an apartment.
I used to dream of having a house but now it looks like I may turn out to be better off. The motto is save, save, save.

so a total of $13,000 or so. yikes.
Yeah, but I don't own anything either. The car I bought for my girlfriend is about 15 years old, and I paid $1000 cash for it.

I am the one who stared the thread. I'm a high school teacher and I have no stake in the data. In fact I started the after a conversation with a co-worker on how much stuff people have and how they afford it all.
