I've looked online and on the irs site, but haven't had much luck finding the exact answer. I recently came across a couple W-2 forms from 1995 (!) that did not get filed. I only made a few thousand dollars, so I didn't have to file, though now looking at one of them, I see I paid about $300 in withheld taxes, which may or may not have been refunded to me if I had filed. My question is whether I could file these still, and if so would I still be able to receive a refund if I overpaid? I'm not sure if they put a time limit on how far back you can file.
Thanks, yeah, I finally came across something online that said the same thing. Well at least an experience like this is a learning one, I'll be sure to have my kids file there taxes from the get go when they get to that point!
They give you three years I think. I filed one I had from 2006 and got a refund.
