I still write a few. I just flipped thru my checkbook and was amused to see that most of the checks I've written so far this year were for stuff like:
- sending a check in a birthday card, to a nephew/niece
- buying cookies/gift paper/whatever else a neighbor child or coworker's kid is selling as a fundraiser
- sending an occasional check to a charitable cause
I used to pay my rent with a check because there was a very steep "convenience fee" for paying online. And every now and then I need my checkbook to give a deposit on something.
I was waiting for someone to mention this one. I hope your nephew/niece are old enough to have their own checking accounts...otherwise their mom can't just take the check, sign it in front of the teller and give them their cash. We ran into that a lot when I worked in a bank. Some banks may look the other way and allow it, but mine wouldn't. Even if we asked the Manager for an exception, she would always tell the customer no. Some people thought they should just be able to cash any check on their account, even one made out to a name not on the account. I often wondered how much that happened, as we'd see it at least once a week or so.
But I only write them rarely. When I get the occasional toll bill from passing through Miami. Maybe two or three times a year. Everything else is on automatic payment and comes out of our rewards CC that we pay off each week in full.
