What a treat. We, former northerners, enjoy the little lizards all over the yard. Today one was between the screen and the window in our dining room (for easy viewing) shedding his skin and eating it. The whole process took only 20 minutes or so.
The skin looked like a white layer of skin, like when we peel a sunburn. He tugged at it, pulled off a chunk and ate it, then repeated the process until it was all gone. Fun to watch.
I saw it happen a few years back when we were in Puerto Rico. I just happened to have my camera handy and filmed some of it. Maybe I should add that video on YouTube.
Ok, now it is driving me crazy. Since my last post in this thread, I have been looking for that video. I found the file it SHOULD be in but it is NOT there. It SHOULD be somewhere on my computer because I never really delete anything. But, I can't find it.
Lizards that eat their skin after shedding do so for two reasons, to reclaim the lost minerals (especially calcium) and second to leave no trace to predators that they are in the area. Lizards that don't tend to stay in one area don't generally eat their shed.
