Exactly. I worked at an Animal Hospital and do know how it is. (quick, painless, and they just go to sleep)
With my own Pets, part of me wants to be with them till the last breath, part of me just wants to say goodbye and remember the perky eyes.
It IS very difficult and up to each individual.
Years later...and
4 Pets later I just want to say goodbye..and remember them as they were.
I think comes down to what a person is comfortable with. Kind of darned of ya do darned if ya don't....
And I think sometimes people forget Vets also have Pets. They are only human. Thus I often ask how their Pets are doing.
what an absolutely HORRIBLE thing to say.... my god...... i am speechless.....
I know! If I would have been there I would not have let her get away with saying something so heartless. But I think my brother was in shock. He is still very defensive about it, and it has stayed with him. I think he blames himself and really believes he caused his cat to go through extreme pain.

Print this out and show it to him. The tech was an idiot and was WRONG.
1. Ask for a sedative that will take the edge off. You can give it to your pet orally before you take her in. Most vets I know will do this for you.
2. Or find a mobile vet that will come to your place or go to a neutral place that your pet will be comfortable in.
Doing a PTS on your own is not a good idea for many reasons. I have assisted in many euthanasias that did not go as planned and it was terribly traumatic. I can not imagine what the owner was going through. Each animal reacts differently and if you are not familiar with the process, you can prolong suffering for you and your baby. Euthanasia is meant to be humane.
I found a vet to come to the house, I wanted to make sure his last minutes were filled with love
We have found one that will come to our home as well. That's a lot less stressful for everyone and a lot better environment for them to spend their last minutes.
most vets that treat horses make house calls. it costs more but at least they come to you.
