Does anyone know if you are able to bring a dog (50lbs) on public transportation if they are in a secured cart type of container?

I don't think so. Service dogs are definitely allowed on all of SEPTA. But I don't think large dogs, even ones in a secured container are allowed. Small ones maybe in a contaner, but I'd be surprised if larger ones are allowed. If no one gives you a definitive answer, definitely call Septa if there's not an answer on their website (www.septa.org).

I bet people carry those little dogs that fit into mini dog carriers, on buses and trains. You often don't notice them unless they yip or their heads are sticking out.

Other than service dogs, SEPTA doesn't allowing any animals onto public transportation. That said, it's true that some smaller, quieter animals may be able to "sneak" on - I may have brought my cat on the El once - but unfortunately it doesn't seem to apply to your case.

Depending on where you need to go, it may be worth investing in a taxi.
