Depends on what you mean by close, but you can try Marsh Creek or French Creek, both west of the city

French Creek has a swimming pool next to the lake, as well as a large picnic area, but you're not actually allowed to swim in the lake.

Not sure about Marsh Creek.

Beltzville has a beach, but is north of allentown. Nockamixon has a large swimming pool, but no beach i believe.

That's correct. Nockamixon doesn't allow swimming in the lake. Once you see it, you probably wouldn't want to anyway.

There are lots of lakes & creeks in the Pine Barrens. I go canoeing there every summer and invariably wind up in the water.

Most places are about an hour east of the city.

Round Valley Recreation Area in NJ has a nice lake beach:
Department of Environmental Protection

It is a little bit over an hour's drive but well worth it IMO.

Beltzville is about the same distance to the north, but the beaches are not guarded and, especially on the weekends are quite crowded and dirty these days.

I often wonder why there are not more "swimming" lakes around the DelVal area, given that we have a number of beautiful state and county parks. Is it unsafe, dirty water or both? I've heard that there exists some super-nasty bacteria in lake water if ingested. Anyone know any more?

The swimming holes in the Pine Barrens are good if you're already canoeing there, but they're not big enough to warrant a trip on their own.

Beltzville and Round Valley seem like the best options in this thread.

I'd also suggest Elk Neck State Park in MD. It's about an hour and a half away from Philly and has a beach right on the Chesapeake Bay. It slipped my mind earlier because I was trying to think of lakes.
