Talk to this Canadian girl about what to expect of Downtown Philly. When/where for fireworks? I have two young boys.

As you would expect, there's a lot going on in Philly July 4th weekend. You might want to review this a start... Welcome America

with kids you would be better suited to take a trip outside the city. Cherry hill, collingswood, Riverton all have wonderful celebrations with small town parades and events..

Depends if my hubby is working or not, frank. I was thinking it might be nice to go to Mt. Laurel, where we will be living in a few weeks. But if he's working I will be without transportation. And yes, I know there is public transport but being new here and a bit unsure of myself, I thought I would stick around Philly.
I read there is a parade down Market St. on the 4th? What is it like?
We will be staying near Rittenhouse Square, where they seem to have a lot of festivals - anything going on there? I haven't looked at PhillyViaBoston's link yet, off to do that now...

Phillie's celebrations are nice but be aware you will get the usual weirdos who also attend.. I guess it depends on what you are looking for... Big city celebrations or small town type celebrations.. We did both and enjoy the small town type better.

So much depends on the weather. It may be nice or it may be unfit for human habitation. 4th of July is sometimes the hottest day of the year and that is too hot to be outside. But it may be ok too. There are two nights of fireworks. One over the Art Museum, probably on the 4th and one over the Delaware river (Penns Landing) on another night. Both will be a crush of people, will run very late in the evening and will require a lot of walking and use of underground transportation because traffic and parking are not an option.
