Thanks in advance for your replies.

I'm a single, young professional thinking of taking a job in south philly from harrisburg (grew up in the bronx and lived for several years in mpls/st paul during grad school so urban lifestyle is not new to me). Just trying to get a sense of people's opinions regarding the various neigborhoods in center city and their opinions of south philly as well.

I'm looking to rent, ideal rent would be around 800-1000 and would be near a place to run outside (park?), local gym/crossfit, grocery stores/etc., relatively safe, less noisier. I would assume mass transit from cc to south philly shouldn't be a problem? Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks again.

I expect you are not getting responses because your questions are not specific enough. You have thousands of options and the lifestyle is different from one area to the next but the things you have listed are available pretty much everywhere. If you haven't yet then read through old threads for information. The search tool works pretty good too. Very basicly South Philly is going to be more like the Bronx and Center City is more like Manhattan all be it on a smaller scale. Your budget will get you a studio in some CC neighborhoods but not in a luxury building. www.4wallsinphilly.com may be helpful, not to find an apartment but for it's descriptions of neighborhoods. Apartments in south Philly are virtually all in private homes or portions of a row house or brownstone. There are hardly any apartment houses there. Less expensive apartments in Center City will also be in walkup brownstones on the fringes.

would you consider the suburbs at all?

I love South Philly. It's a great part of town. Public transit service is very prevalent in South Philly. If you can stay near the Broad Street Line, you can travel to Center City and beyond efficiently. You might consider the area around Marconi Plaza, which is a park. There is a Broad Street Line (subway) station right next to the park. The areas in South Philly closer to Center City are more expensive. I don't know what the price range is though. There's a big shopping center at Columbus Commons (Oregon Ave and Delaware Blvd). There's a really good supermarket there. I forget what it's called but it's huge and quite nice. The area around South Street is really fun, but it's probably kind of pricey.

If you will be working in South Philly I would definitely live in a South Philly neighborhood close to Center City to have an easy commute to both work and Center City. That sounds like a great situation to me. Look at Bella Vista, Italian Market, Queen Village, East Passyunk maybe even Graduate Hospital area although you would be further from the subway.

I echo the other posters who suggest you live in South Philly. I'm especially fond of the Passyunk Square neighborhood (boundaries: 6th to Broad Streets, Washington to Tasker Streets).
