I am going to start interning at University of Penn. I will be on 38th and Walnut street. I live near Norristown so I wanted to take the train to save gas and parking money. I looked at the route and saw I could take the r6 to university city and walk a couple blocks. When I looked at the r6 schedual how ever they have dashes (-) in most of the times goes down. They also have dashes for university city departing except for a couple of times like 2:17 and 5:32. I start work at 10 and finish at 3 monday and wensdays. My question is why is there dashes does that mean the train only leaves to go to norristown at 2 and 5? Or does it leave and go to university city every hour? I tried calling septa but of course could not talk to anyone. Any help would be great thanks!

That's correct, the train doesn't continue to University City throughout the day. Walking from 30th st station could be an option in decent weather, it's a bit over a mile. You could also transfer to the El at 30th st and then get off at 40th and Market.

Hi ilovemyjeep127,

As you suspected and philly333 confirmed, the dashes means the train does not service that station at that time. If you want to go to University City Station, you would have to switch trains at 30th St Station. You would switch onto a train line that has continuous service to University City Station.
These Regional Rail lines are:
The Airport Line (http://www.septa.org/schedules/rail/pdf/air.pdf)
The Media/Elwyn Line (http://www.septa.org/schedules/rail/pdf/elw.pdf) &
The Wilmington/Newark Line (http://www.septa.org/schedules/rail/pdf/nwk.pdf)
NOTE: The Regional Rail Lines are no longer are identified by the letter 'R' and numbers (since july 2010). For example, the "R6" is now offically called the Manayunk/Norristown Line.

You could catch the Manayunk/Norristown Line that leaves Elm Street/Norristown at 8:36 AM; which arrives at 30th St Station at 9:34 AM. Then walk over to cacth the Media/Elwyn Line scheduled to leave 30th St at 9:43 AM. The next stop is University City, arriving at 9:45 AM. On the return, there are trains (at U.C.) headed toward 30th St at 3:31 PM & 3:34 PM. They will get you there in time to catch the Manayunk/Norristown Line departing at 3:57 PM.

Be advised that Univserity Station is about 5-6 blocks from 38th St & Walnut (30th St Station is nearly 10 blocks away). I would recommend taking the Manayunk/Norristown Line to 30th St, then walking across the street to the subway entrance and catching a SEPTA subway surface trolley. You could catch any westbound trolley - EXCEPT Route 10 - to 36th St Station. This is located at 36th St & Walnut St, two blocks from your desitnaiton. There are four trolleys lines you could catch (routes 11, 13, 34 & 36); between them they run every 5 minutes or less. The ride itself is 3 minutes. If you use a Trailpass (Zone 3), it will cover everything fare-wise. (NOTE: Taking the trolley may allow you to get an earlier train home. Take an eastbound trolley to the last stop/13th St, then walk and catch the 3:18 PM Manayunk/Norristown Line at Market East Station at 12th St & Market St; it'll be close but possible).
