Hello,
I've been looking into moving to Glenside, PA. The last posts on Glenside seem to be a few years old so I was hoping I could get an update.

My husband and I both will be working from home, and are expecting our first child in the fall. We keep unusual hours and like being able to walk around in the evenings. Having visited it seems like a very nice, safe area. I like that it seems very walkable, local shops, crime seems low, schools are good, Septa into Philly, the houses are lovely. What I also like is that because it's outside of Philly the wage tax seems to be pretty low. RE taxes seem a bit high but it since the public schools seem good, as does the library, etc., I'm ok with that.

Can anyone help me out with some other pros/cons, or things a non-resident might not be aware of - good or bad. We intend to stay for many years to come so I'm wondering specifically about any trends people might see in this area or the surrounding towns that might be important to think about before setting down roots. And if you have favorite local treasures in the area I'd be interested to hear about those as well.

Thanks!

You'll pay less for property tax generally if you live in Abington vs. Cheltenham. South of Mt. Carmel Ave is Cheltenham. In season, there is a good farmers market at the Glenside train station on Saturdays.

The Keswick Avenue corridor - anchored by the Keswick Theatre which hosts national musical and entertainment acts in an intimate setting - adds a bit of suburban hipness to the area. My personal belief is that as that the entertainment options expand and/or diversify, Glenside will become a trendy little burgh...if it isn't already considered one.

Sounds like from what you're looking for, you've found yourself a winner.

I am getting ready to move to Abington and there seems to be a shortage of supermarkets compared to the city. Only one Shoprite and one Pathmark, both on Cheltenham Av and the Acme in Jenkintown which is not an option (too expensive) Also there is the Whole Foods and Trader Joe's in Rydal, neither of which is suitable for serious grocery shopping.

Re: Supermarkets. There is a Genuardi's (recently acquired by Giant) in Roslyn (Susquehanna and Easton Rd). Many folks I know (myself included) go to Giant in Willow Grove.

We like the fact that the theater is there so fingers crossed that the community keeps growing. Noticed that there's a mini-golf place up the road too. Total winner! Thanks for the input!
