Seems like every era has its own vehicle for people to rebel against the status quo. In the 60s and 70s it was Marxism. Now the trend is to cover yourself up and claim you are fighting the social norms in the name of Islam. I doubt very much that any of those people live anything close to what Islam requires of them. Praying 5 times a day; the first before sunrise. Fasting up to 18 hours a day for a whole month and no drinks ever.

You are right. I did not want to go to deep on the whole history of Mosque number 12, The Black Mafia,The Graterford prison riot and Nudie Mims.

I was driving through Strawberry Mansion the other day on the way to visit a friend at Temple and saw a ton of the locals were wearing various clothing I associate with Islam including skull cabs, hijab's and what not. I was pretty surprised at how prevalent it was, and even more interested in it now that I have read this thread. I'd imagine that North Philly in general, and specifically the western side of the central part of North Philly has the largest population of African-American Muslims. However I have no basis for this other than the fact that most of the time when i've been to North Philly I have seen more than a few people dressed in that fashion.

Anywhere where there is black people in the city is where I see the muslim wear. And I guess that's almost every part of the city since it is a black city. I live in North Philadelphia myself.

Also, I'm going mostly off looks when I talk about black muslims. I'm guessing the black muslim population may be bigger; because one may be a muslim, but is just not wearing the clothes or the beard.

Ok, I'm interested now and want you to go deep. What are these people and events? I've never heard of them. I know the Nation of Islam has a branch in Philadelphia, but what in particular about it is interesting?

I don't feel a lot of these African-american converts are really practicing Islam the way it should be practiced...like the immigrants from Arab countries do. I feel the African-Americans in Philly are doing it to rebel against the white imperialistsic religion of Christianity that was forced on them. . .

It's funny when I see the girls especially, all covered up, pushing a baby stroller with 3 babies in it...all from diff baby-daddy's.....cell phone in their niqab, pregnant with a 4th...never been married,...prob 19 years old.

It's just ridic.

It should be noted that there are white American Muslim converts in Philly too, although in much smaller numbers.

are you talking about fake Muslims (aka Malcolm X/Louis Farrakhan FOI sells bean pies in Grey's Ferry etc etc) or real muslims (shia, sunni...)?
