Hah ok.

The commute before was little to no traffic but is similar time-wise, so yea the travel will not faze me much. It is REALLY nice though having a 10-15min commute in the morning now though lol, but that's the price to pay to be in the thick of things.

I've seen a couple places so far and nothing looks good yet, but the apartment I will be seeing today sounds like it is a keeper. However, the problem is that it is in the "Gayborhood" area of Philly. The building is located at 1201 chestnut street. I have nothing against gay people, I just want to be in/near a good spot for straight young guys my age looking for some girls. Would it be a significant problem living here? I like how it is in the center of everything, but if it's not a good place for a straight guy my age (23) then I'll look somewhere else.

The "Gayborhood", also known as "Midtown Village", is a great neighborhood located in the heart of Center City. As a single heterosexual male you will have no problem living there. While there are bars/clubs that cater to the gay population of Philly, there are also a plethora of nightlife options for straight individuals as well.

I lived at 10th and Spruce with my girlfriend a few years ago and we loved it. You can walk anywhere in the city, and all the amenities that you need are right at your doorstep. I would highly recommend the neighborhood as it's safe and offers great variety.

Yeah, it's not wall-to-wall gays - it's a mix. I think it's mostly just a young professionals neighborhood. I would guess heteros are still in the majority even there. (I too am a great friend of gays/ gay rights, but I hear what you're saying about wanting to be where you're likely to meet interested girls). In fact, I think women would be even more impressed that you live in one of the more sophisticated neighborhoods.

Good luck!

Lol. The Gayborhod is just another name for the Washington Square West Neighborhood (also called Midtown Village by some). The area is great and diverse with both straight and gay people. I wouldn't worry too much about that. You will have great access to a ton of bars and restaurants and you will be close to public transit. I live in Washington Square West right now actually and it's the best part of the city I've lived in thus far (P.S., I'm straight).

Even in the gayborhood straight people must out number gays at least 5:1. There are more gay people than average living in the neighborhood and a number of gay bars. A straight person wouldn't feel out of place in the least.

Calling 12th and Chestnut part of the "Gayborhood" would be a stretch IMO. That block is part of an area - including Market Street - that caters primarily to the tastes of working-class/lower-middle class (and presumably mostly straight) Blacks and Hispanics. You're never far from any type of scene in Center City's two square miles.

Thanks for allaying my fear everyone, good to know that it is fine. I really like the area because it is in the center of everything and close to many good restaurants and bars, plus the Crossfit gym that I eventually want to join hah. How did you guys find your apartment that you are currently living in or were living in? I've been using trulia and zillow, and just started doing google searches like "center city philadelphia apartments," but am just wondering how you guys managed to find yours. I've seen five apartments so far and while three of them were good (at the 1201 chestnut location), they were not facing the street and felt like I was in a dungeon, I'd prefer a street-view from my apartment.

I happened to get my because I had friends living here before that I moved in with. Trulia and Zillow are good. Craigslist can be another good site, but be cautious, there are a lot of scammers on Craigslist.

You can also find out names of buildings and contact the listing agent listed on the buildings website.

For example, the Arch, which is also in a great location has it's own leasing office
The Arch Apartments - 1701 Arch - Center City Apartments - Scully Company

Also, I wouldn't really consider 12th and Chestnut to be the Gayborhood. That is more the Market East neighborhood.
