Not sure if are being serious or not, but I would suggest that you look at a basic map. Your ideas about Philadelphia's geography seem just a teeny tiny bit off. By the way, the Delaware is a little bit more open than the Mexican-American border. There are even five bridges in the immediate area that many people utilize everyday. There's also a 24hr/day rapid transit line that hits every major spot in CC, or if not, connects to the subway to get you there.

Just for kicks, I did Newtown Square to Philly and Hammonton (which is in the geographic middle of South Jersey aka nowhere) to Philly in Google Maps and got 42 minutes in current traffic for both.

TBF, Newtown Square would definitely be more convenient during peak traffic conditions, but your general point certainly stands. Also, what route are you using? If you hop on 476 to the Schuylkill this time of night, I'd imagine it would be more than a half hour. Of course you couldn't get away with that during rush hour.

I'll admit, I'm being harsh on Mike. I just looked at the first one that Maps gave: W. Chester Pike - Rt. 1 - Lancaster Ave - W Girard - 76 - Vine St. Admittedly convoluted. For the route you described it says 36 mins.

It'll take over an hour to get to city hall in heavy traffic if you take west chester pike / market street. You will also get stopped at probably at least a dozen lights. If you did this regularly, you would eventually get pulled over for running a red light.

There is no way that these are numbers for the entire states. You must be comparing SEPA and SJ only, right? PA is far, far less diverse, as a whole, compared to NJ.
