When I was freelancing some years back, I had an individual plan through Blue Cross. I think it was in the vicinity of ~$150 / month. Not fancy, but a decent, basic plan that covered the major stuff and could help me sleep at night. Of course, that option might not be available to you if you don't have a clean health history, but it's worth checking out.

Also, another option is emergency health insurance. Before I signed on with IBX, I had a so-called "emergency" plan that I signed up for through State Farm, my auto carrier. It will only cover the absolute basics (basically, if you have to go to the hospital), but it's super cheap and can at least give you some peace of mind.

The same thing happened to me. (I live in one of the Philadelphia 'burbs.) I thought the Philly area was only served by Independence Blue Cross. The Highmark website states at the bottom of their site that they "serve the 29 counties of western Pennsylvania".
