I was laid off from my legal assistant position after 20 years on Friday. I was really burned out, so I'm fine about this. I am covered medically through 3/31. Then I can go on Cobra, but that's so expensive. Is there any lower cost, good reputation companies. This must include a prescription plan (and dental if possible)? I want a PPO and know there will be a deductible, but want a low one. As a starting point, with Cobra, I would be paying close to $700 just for me. Thanks.

Thanks Tone - but I'm really okay. I plan to sleep late and catch up on movies.

As part of "pa fair care" (Obama Care) I was able to hook up with Highmark Blue Shield PPO for 283. per month as a single. It includes pre existing and prescriptions. Before that I was actually without coverage for a year but I managed to survive. 2 more months and I will be on medicare.

Unfortunately my doctors don't accept Highmark. But thanks anyway.

Default Pre-existing health care-Affordable Healthcare Act

I just found out that the Department of Human Services has suspended the Pre-existing healthcare program nationwide until further notice. I am on this program in a different state and thus will be grandfathered in the application process after I move to PA.

I am surprised to hear that since it is Blue Cross. I haven't used it too much but I have yet to see a provider who didn't accept it including my long time family doctor. It was originally only good in western PA but now it is also in SE PA.

That was one reason I never went anywhere near Cobra due to how expensive it was for one person.

I just decided to live without insurance until I found another job because there was no way I could pay for insurance while on unemployment. Sorry to hear about your layoff.

I checked again and when I put in my zip code it came up not available in this area. And my doctors (or any doctors) at Jefferson don't take it anyway.

I had already moved to Montgomery County when I applied. It is also possible that the program is filled up.
