I was so surprised last night as I traveled down Chestnut street from 22nd to 4th street and was amazed at how dark it was on a saturday night. It looks nothing like Walnut street just very dark which makes the atmosphere very unattractive. There is no reason for a section of center city to look like that at night time unless that is the look for the winter time.

I know for a fact Chestnut street doesn't look like that on a Saturday Night in July or does it?

I would say Chestnut up until about Broad Street is fine. For me it's the stretch between Broad and 7th that needs to be completely redeveloped. There are a lot of empty store fronts and old buildings that can probably be renovated or demolished and something new rebuilt there. I would assume the empty store fronts lend to the darkness. But I agree, something needs to be done about that stretch. I think between Broad and the Schuylkill is fine though actually and is currently rebuilding itself. Tons of new shops, apartments complexes going up on this stretch.

On both sides of the street it was dark from 22nd to 5th street and the stores were closed which was weird because it was only 8pm at the time.

Saturday night isn't big for retail anywhere in the city (or anyplace except suburban malls) and Chestnut east is pretty short of bars and resturants that are open. Still it shouldn't be dark. Were the street lights off for some reason maybe?

I don't think so, it just had that 2am look and it wasn't only 8pm in the evening lol When I came back up Walnut 2 hours later it looked more LIT UP

I have to say that Rittenhouse is the most attractive section of center city at night.

What are you talking about? It's not dark at all! In fact that stretch of the city is more vibrant than 99% of American downtowns.

On both sides of the street from 21st to 5th street, Chestnut street was dark and unappealing especially for a saturday night at 8pm

It was "Earth Hour" a lot of people in the cities turned off their lights from 830-930, that might be why haha. Plus it might just have been a dull winter night.

Chestnut Street east of Broad Street is starting to take-off in terms of development. A new hotel is going in on the 1200 block as well as retail in-fill between 10th-12th. It's only a matter of time until the corridor is ''lit-up'' at night. Of course after 10th Street east you are in Jefferson Medical area then the Independence Mall historic area etc. So really, it's 13th Street to 10th Street that needs the ''work''.
