Hey, I live around Upenn and go to center city often too. What are some good meal options for below five dollars? I like that Subway footlongs and Wawa 10 inch classics can usually fill me up, but are there better and cheaper alternatives? Both are slightly over five with tax.

If possible, I want a healthy choice too. I always get lots of vegetables when I go to the two places, and a better alternative would be nice.

Food trucks food trucks food trucks. There's a great vegetarian one off 34th and Walnut (and some others offering healthy choices as well).

What kind of deals are you talking about? After chips and a drink, I've never left paying less than $8.

I see you can get a "plain slim" for $3.33. If you like just meat and bread, all the more power too you, but I need veggies and some kind of spread. You'll get less bread, but just as much meat and all the trimmings for the same price from any food truck worth its salt.

Love the food at Magic Carpet at Penn, but it's kind of pricey. There's a good falafel place on 36 & Market though. $5 gets you a platter and a can of soda (or a bottled water) for lunch. The Big Blue Truck at 35 & Market offers huuuge hoagies, most right at $5. Half of one will fill you up, so you can save the other half for dinner. Much better than the bland chain shops, plus you're supporting a local business.

Another option, but not close to U City... Loco Pez in Kenzo. They offer weekly $1 taco nights. Follow them on twitter to find out what day.
