The stampede was pretty frightening for a moment and I did expect a major story for the reasoning behind it, but I guess humans are prone to be frantic and herd-like in certain situations. Like many have said, a cover-up shooting doesn't even seem remotely possible (although if someone wanted to conceal only the sound of gunfire, a fireworks show is as good a time as any).

Regardless, I had a great time and The Roots put on a great show. Not sure if I'll go to the concert next year or not, but I realized going down the shore later in the weekend that the beach is not a viable alternative for beating the crowds on a holiday weekend.

It is a possibility that there might have been a shooting, but nobody knows exactly what happened so they do not confirm a shooting and look for a different possibility that is more plausible given the context. There are a lot of sounds that sound like a shooting, so I doubt we'll ever know the true source.

Who do you think "they" is?
The media likes a story that's sensational and easy to sell. "4th of July shooting in scary Philadelphia!!" would be a sensational story that every news outlet would trip over themselves trying to break. Especially this year in the wake of the Boston bombing.

How in the world would CBS3, 6ABC, NBC10, and FOX29 or for that matter the Inky, Daily News, etc benefit from covering this story in order ensure the Made in America concert is a success?

What do you think sells better? "Dangerous Shooting turns Philadelphia's 4th July Celebration into a Nightmare!" or "Successful Turnout at Local Concert"

I mean honestly, what are you smoking? Nothing makes the local news stations here more giddy than blood on the streets and government corruption. These two topics put eyeballs on the tv and sell newspapers like no other. The media would have certainly reported a shooting if one took place and they'd definitely rush to cover any type of cover-up scandal by the government.

It's been four days. No shooting has been reported. No shooting occurred.

Are you from West Philly dude??? A shooting between a knucklehead or two will not drop the population of the next major event on the PKWY. If 500,000 are expected to show up then at least 485,000 will still turn out. Maybe about 15-20,000 will not because of it. If it was a terrorist attack by IED or a sniper popping people from a rooftop............Then that's a WHOLE different scenario. A shooting, where people aren't being trampled to death or a few innocents killed by gun fire/stabbings/etc; won't deter most Philadelphians.

Also I believe the MIA Concert is NOT free so.......

I was there until about a half hour before the fireworks were scheduled. Saw and heard no incidents, only a lot of people having fun. The thing that most surprised me was how respectful and cordial every one was. For all of those people, not one person jostled me, or bumped into me as we passed eachother - everyone seemed to be really kind and polite to eachother, at least walking around the parkway (I didn't even try to get close to the music). I was kind of impressed with that.

For the most part yeah... although this one guy walked passed me and nailed me hard with an elongated bag he was carrying on his back with something quite hard in it. Otherwise, I had pretty good space, but I didn't bother going past Logan Circle. People seemed well-behaved, although there sure were a lot of people smoking marijuana walking right by the coppers. I found that rather funny.
