I am considering moving to Philly and would like to know the best neighborhoods to move into. By best I mean safe, multi-cultural and not too far from Center City. Also how is the traffic driving into the city? I have heard that Germantown/Chestnut Hill area is a very nice area. How is rent in this neighborhood? What is the best way in finding apartments online vs. newspaper ads? Any suggestions. Thanks

Southwest Philly by the airport might not be bad. Generally rugged blue collar areas. I had friends who lived out there back in the 80's. Not overly safe but not overly dangerous either. A very grey area. Rents are fairly cheap.

You may want to look in the King of Prussia area. My son lives in Philly and we stay in the KOP area when visiting. It seems like a nice area with what I believe is the second largest mall in the nation. Blue Bell is also near by and it is quite richsey. I am impressed with Philly as Center City seems very nice and much cleaner then I expected. It is a fun "party" town and great for the younger "Yuppie" crowd. Roosevelt Blvd. is an experience in itself. Six lanes of traffic in each direction and better make sure you are in the lane you need to be in!!!!! My son loves it there, he will never move back to New Mexico.

rents in the city of philly are the highest so stay away from there. germantown/chestnut hill is a a real hit or miss. check it out thoroughly there are some tough areas there they usually are also the cheaper rentals!!!

I don't agree, Chestnut Hill and West Mt. Airy are both beautiful neighborhoods, with lots of greenery, that are an easy train ride or drive into center city. They are diverse areas as well, both racially and sexually. If you have children they have some very good public and some excellent private schools as well.

My DD lives in a neighborhood behind the Art Museum, and loves it. Her neighbors are very nice, there are great restaurants and little shops within an easy walking distance. She can literally see the Art Museum from her front door. I wouldn't mind living there myself.

i moved from south philly to the burbs 3 years ago...i wouldnt live in the city ever again. dont get me wrong..i will always love it down there....just not a place i would want to live

Chestnut Hill is quite nice, but I wouldn't reccomend Germantown. It's a beautiful area, but the great architecture is overshadowed by the crime and poverty in the area. Mt. Airy is the most diverse neighborhood and is considered to be one of the best integrated neighborhoods in the United States. There are a lot of apartments in both Mt. Airy (which is right next to Chestnut Hill) and Chestnut Hill. Both have their own websites.
The best way to get into center city is probably to drive through East Falls onto Kelly Drive. It takes me about 15 minutes to get to Logan Circle or the big library from Mt. Airy on an average traffic day. Chestnut Hill would be a couple of minutes extra, I think.
Chestnut Hill and Mt. Airy are both
in Philadelphia, so you've got a Philly address, which is something to brag about with your friends back home.
