I understand Suburban Station has a ton of entrances but now I have heard that not all of them are open in the early morning. Which entrances will reliably be open at 530 on a weekend? If there are multiple options, which options will be cleanest/most well lit/most highly trafficked by other riders?

All subway entrances open at 4:30-5:00 in the morning (when the first BSL leaves and the system effectively "wakes" up). I'm not sure if this applies to Regional Rail, but I'm pretty sure all of gates come down at that time...if you need assurance, then just walk to Suburban Station from City Hall station. That's defiantly open at that time in the morning.

In my original post I meant to say weekday, not weekend. Anyway, I went there myself at that time and the entrances with the fancy bronze doors at 16th street and JFK street are locked, but the 17th and JFK stairwell and the big glass Metro Market entrance at 16th and JFK were open. There were security and police personnel as well as a good number of riders there so it wasn't isolated at all.
