Have to be more specific. The "north side" of Philadelphia includes everything from brownstones in Fairmount and mansions in chestnut hill to areas that look like gotham city. Which neighborhood in particular are you asking about?

I would live in some parts of North Philly, but not in others.

Strawberry Mansion, unfortunately, is considered one of the bad neighborhoods. Empty, abandoned houses, litter strewn lots, high crime, scary at night.

I would not live in Strawberry Mansion.

Sadly Strawberry Mansion is nothing like the real northwest side which includes East Falls, Manayunk, Germantown, East and West Mt Airy, Chestnut Hill and Roxborough.

Strawberry Mansion gets its name from the actual Strawberry Mansion which is part of the array of historic colonial mansions in Fairmount Park. Now those are absolutely worth touring.

A decade of war in Philly's deadliest neighborhood :: Cover :: Philadelphia City Paper

I read this article a while back - it's an interesting summary of the violence/crime in Strawberry Mansion

Something that's always amazed me when looking at maps of the various neighborhoods in a city, any city, is how close a bad areas can be to good areas. I was just looking at a Google map and I have to say, I had no idea that Brewerytown was so close to Strawberry Mansion. One of the reasons it's never quite gentrified, perhaps, even though it's been trying for years?
