I just found out that City Paper no longer exists (sad I know.) That's how much life gets in the way. What would you say is more equivalent to what was in there? (not that this could ever be truly replaced, but life goes on)

The City Paper was what is generally known as an “alternative weekly”. Its publication was halted because it was acquired by the publishers of Philadelphia’s other alternative weekly, Philadelphia Weekly. That paper is still being printed, and you can find it all over the city in yellow vending machines with the paper’s PW logo (usually next to the vendors for Metro and Philadelphia Gay News).

What does it mean to stop publishing but to continue printing? It's more of a volunteer organization? The only difference for me as a consumer is that the website is not kept up with it seems.

The Philadelphia Citizen

Also, there are online pubs like the West Philly Local but maybe these are apples and oranges from what you’re asking.

"That paper" in the post you responded to refers not to the Philadelphia CityPaper, whose archives have even disappeared, it seems, but to Philadelphia Weekly, whose publisher acquired the CP and shut it down.

There reallly isn't another publication here that has the alt-weekly style and attitude; I'd say the Citizen is way too earnest in that regard. (But I do like its focus on getting readers involved in solving the problems they write about.)

You might find some of that style and tone at Phillymag, and our website has fresh content daily. But I wouldn't say it has the typical alt-weekly's focus on comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable.

I have a few "archives" in paper format because I haven't read them yet. Anyone want to buy them? lol.

Yeah the Citizen doesn't work for me in that stylistic regard. Even though my comprehension is sometimes questionable, I tend to understand and feel the vibe of alt-weekly and will likely understand it more than others. Am I too old to say I'm naturally "young" and hip? lol.
