Not to hijack the thread, but that crime map is odd to me. Specifically that much of South Philly, Uni City/West Philly, Fairmount and Northern Libs are lumped in with Center City. Also, I used to work around 64th and Elmwood, and there is no way that area could be yellow whereas areas like 52nd and Springfield in Kingsessing or 30th and Jefferson in Brewerytown are red. That area of SW Philly is much rougher than Brewerytown or East Kingsessing.

Anyway, for the OP, I'd just take that with a grain of salt. I agree that you should visit. Philly is worlds away from LA.

My fiance is from there but has not lived there for 15 years and we hear so much has changed. The weather .....yikes....I know that will be hard to get used too! but truth is...California is always hot year around...no seasons and no weather at all. I wish it would rain more here. I am just nervous and excited and feel like I am going there with no friends and its just a little scary.
Wow, well, buckle up! lol.

Have you been to the Northeast at all? Like NYC?

The fact that your fiance is from here will absolutely help. You will have cultural shock being a native Angelino. Hopefully it won't be too bad.

Yes, a lot has changed here since the early 2000s. In particular new housing and gentrification. Areas that saw no development in decades is seeing it now in brand new rentals and housing. If you want more walkability to Center City, you might want to look into rentals at Granary, Alexander, Museum Towers or Hamilton. All of those, particularly the Granary, put you right near, Target and Whole Foods, for instance. It also puts you closer to Fairmount Park.

Didn't SoCal just go through a bunch of much needed rain?

We do have four seasons here, btw.

Folks are friendly here. Don't believe stuff that we're not.

I do see California plates here from time to time, btw. It's not that strange.

Thank you! Yeah, it's a bad map.

Obviously a pointless troll post.

I have a budget of 1200 monthly to spend.
$1200 a month will get you a decent 1-bedroom apartment in much of the city. And maybe even one with more than 545 square feet of space, though I wouldn't hold my breath for that.

But you will have a hard time finding one of these in Center City now. I'd probably look in Bella Vista or East Passyunk if I were you.

As for the weather, winter will probably be the biggest adjustment for you. But I hear it snowed in LA this past week. Maybe that's Mother Nature getting you ready for your move.

kyb01: Even a broken clock is right twice a day. That (crowdsourced, I suspect) crime map has all sorts of problems with it. Not least of them is that the shapes are given neighborhood names that don't correspond to the territories in question.
