I will be going to Philadelphia for vacation this summer and I would like to see some of the rougher sections of Philadelphia but obviously I don't want to be killed. So if someone could tell me some rougher sections I could see in the middle of the day and be OK.

Can you provide a physical description of yourself and will you be in a car?

Anyone else feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but if you have a car - there isn't a single place in the city I would not go to during the day. Expecially if I was with someone else. Going solo on foot may be uncomfortable if you don't know the area and are getting stares from others, but I've yet to have a problem as a mid-20's male in my 8 or so years here. Of course I wouldnt have any valuables in many sections philly.

For an idea of violence levels, see The Philadelphia Inquirer - but don't let that map frighten you more than it should - it is for the entire year of 07 and mostly includes purpose-driven murders, not that that makes it OK.

To be perfectly honest, the most threatened I have felt in Philly has both times been right next to the convention center post-midnight when someone and their "lookout" approached me - which ended up being them wanting to sell me product.

This isn't to say not to use good sense of course.

I have some ideas but I'm hesitant to give them out as I'm confused as to why you would want to seek these areas out. Depending on your developed tolerance for grit -as well as your ability to blend in with a community - there are a few interesting places to see that might fall beyond theusual tourist destinations.

I can also tell you exactly where to go, depending on what you are looking for, but 1st I have to know what you look like and whether or not you are on foot or in a car.

6th and Cecil B. Moore. You may be standing in a cobble stone street full of abandoned, dilapitated buildings with a black man in a winter jacket (regardless of the season) pushing a shopping cart full of assorted junk. Oh, how did I get so jaded?

Meh.. you'd probably get your urban kicks driving under the el along Market Street in West Philly and Kensington Avenue in Kensington.

Don't go down any little small streets if you don't have to. Stick to the larger streets so you can get around a double parked car if you have to.
