I currently live in los angeles and will be moving to philly to begin school in the fall for my doctorate. I will be attending the main campus of la salle in olney but do not want to live there!
what i am looking for is a hip/trendy place for people in their late 20's early 30's that is social but not to hustle and bustle. I am not exactly a "City girl" but dont want to be in the suburbs with a bunch of middle-class families. I wont; know anyone when i move so i want a place where i can meet people and make friends.
the areas im conidering are: art museum, no libs, old city, conchy, and manayunk. I am open to all ideas. I also want something safe and an area where i can park my car but also wont take me 2 hrs to drive to school.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE advise me of where to live. i keep getting mixed reviews on all the areas and im going crazy!

probably manayunk or east falls would suit you. manayunk might be tougher on parking, guess it depends on your street. conshohocken has a lot of young folks, but it seems more young couples. It's a sleepy suburban town.

I agree with Eggtimer. Check out East Falls stay North of Midvale though. I lived in east falls for three years. It is walking distance to the train R6 and parking is easy. Expect to pay about 850-1100 month depending on what you want; should be less than cali though. Hope that helps

thank you all for your opinions. I'm going to check out east falls, manayunk, and art museum. Ill probably head out there for a few days and check out the area and try to secure an apartment!

i would also recommend queen village or bella vista. lots of people in your age range, easy to meet people as there is an abundance of nightlife. but rent is higher than east falls area. and parking requires patience. how about we switch houses, ill take your LA pad and you can take my philly pad. sweeet.

arent those areas more south in the city? won't it be rediculous trying to get to la salle from there?!! sure we can switch places LOL

I'm interested in this as well. Which of the recommended neighborhoods have the cheapest rents? One thing I like about Pittsburgh is that my apt is in a corner and costs 550/mo all utilities

If you can find anything under $550 in Philly, it won't be in a very desirable or convenient area.
I would say that $700 would probably be a good starting point for something reasonably comfortable. If you want to live downtown, $1000 is not unusual.
