Guys

I have been living in Philly for 7 years but I really have no idea about the suburbs. I was a college going 20 something guy when I moved into Philly and living in the city was my only option back then. I am getting married in 2 months and realize I need to stay a little away from the city but not too far away from work. A 30 min. commute is fine I guess.

So here is the problem. I have visited many suburbs over the years (Bensalem, KOP, South NJ, Exton, Manayunk/Rox, Media...you name it). But just visiting those 'burbs never gave me a clue as to what the real scenario is out there. I mean like the crime rates, sex off.s etc.

So in my search for a safe neighborhood, I have it boiled down to either Manayunk or Prospect Park. Both are conveniently located, not too far from the train stations ( and less than 10 miles from the city if I decided to drive down to work one fine day) and seem to have a good suburban feel to them. Any ideas? I am particularly inclined towards Prospect Park as I feel Man./Rox. has become kinda saturated with the modern urban youth who work in the city but live away.

Thanks

Where are you working? Note that Manayunk is actually in the city.

Have you looked in Ardmore? And married people are allowed to live in center city. Maybe look in Queen Village or Bella Vista?

Hahahha...Center City is still an option except for the crappy parking situation. I will look into Ardmore. Thanks.

you mean expensive parking?
why not west philly or east falls as well?
though manayunk and east falls are In the city, they are really suburbs within city limits.

I would choose Norwood over Prospect Park if you want suburban feeling but why not go out to Media/Wallingford/Swarthmore/Folsom/Springfield/Ridley Park or in to Drexel Hill/Havertown/Bryn Mawr/Ardmore/Narberth/Wynnewood/Bala Cynwyd/Belmont Hills?

Prospect Park is nothing like Manayunk and is pretty "blah" if you ask me...

The Norwood comment is true. But I think all those areas are great to live in, real nice atmospheres. The Main Line (Bala Cynwyd, Bryn Mawr, Wynnewood, Villanova, Radnor, Rosemont, etc) and Swarthmore are especially impressive. Lansdowne may also be an option for you, 10 min outside the city by regional rail or car.

Prospect Park is very safe, but probably very boring to someone your age. Why don't you take a look at Media, it has a great downtown, and more people your age. I think Lansdowne is a good choice. Take a look at the Lansdowne blog on the Delco Times website: http://www.Delcotimes.com
