It seems that Mr. Neil deGrasse Tyson has ticked off the field of philosophy this month. Examples:
An Open Letter to Neil deGrasse Tyson | The Horseless Telegraph

Neil deGrasse Tyson and the value of philosophy | Scientia Salon

Back to you. What do you think? Does Neil have a poor understanding of Philosophy?

I think philosophers who take themselves too seriously are hilarious.

The articles are too long to read. If you want to take a contrarian stand on it, give us an idea what it is that he said that you disagree with.

Did Tyson say that he is a philosopher and that what he posits is philosophy? Or only that philosophy is a field that borders on all thoughtful endeavor and that what he says appears to be true, even when held to a philosophical test? Which is what everybody does by implication when asserting a position to be valid.

I'm not a philosopher, but I have philosopher friends who have been posting non-stop articles on Facebook about this guy's comments lately. I have no opinion one way or the other. Mr. Tyson was basically saying what a lot of people say, that Philosophy is mind rot. Since this is the philosophy section, I thought maybe some of you more philosophical types would be familiar with this story.

You'd think they'd be more philosophical about it.

The problem lies in the definition of the word "philosophy" -- which doesn't seem to have a working definition. Except to say that it is "thinking more or less rationally" about just about anything, and I doubt if you can accuse Tyson of failing to think rationally about anything, compared to other presenters of TV shows.

Don't get Neil mad... Have you seen the way he swaggers as he walks? Looks like he's ready, willing, and able to kick oz. Move over Chuck.

They are too long to read on idle speculation, just to see if they say anything interesting or that I didn't already know or otherwise have any value. If somebody else read them, give us the gist of what they say. I'm not going to spend hours or days of my time treading every link just because some poster says "read this and tell me what you think".

If you don't have time to think out an opening premise and state it concisely (using links for illustrative purposes, if useful or necessary), I don't have time to comment on it.

Well, in all honesty pure philosophy is basically just mental masturbation: it's enjoyable to the individual participant, but it's useless to everyone else.
