Mine was starting to look a little like that. I had the lawn guy raise his mower so the grass wasn't cut so short and it really helped.

Are you sure that the grass was ever seeded with the summer grass at all?

It may sound strange, but I bought my home last year and even though the landscape guy who laid down the winter rye sod claimed that they put the dormant seed down for the bermuda, it didn't come up at all, and my grass looked a lot like yours. I ended up going to Home Depot and manually reseeding it myself, following the directions carefully...and then a couple weeks later...voila...I have bermuda growing like crazy. However, I would get a better quality one if I had to do it all over again because mine is very weedy. You can only tell when you get up close to it but still, it's not pretty the way rye is.
Anyhow, good luck...keep us posted.

Thanks again for the replies. Will keep posted on progress. In the past, I believed that the deteriorating quality was due to being overwatered but now I think it was because of the fungus. It's also full of ants and that awful clover that is sticky. I believe these 2 things are because of overwatering too. I am going to a nursery type place on the way home and buying the stuff. thanks again,

Probably something like this will do the trick.

Thanks, well, I got some stuff made by specticide for lawn disease from Home Depot, I know I should go to a nursery or get something more like you showed in the link from amazon but it's something I really want to do now. However, I got the stuff home and it says I can't apply until the tempature doesn't go over 85 degrees.... Will it look even worse if I put it down when the sun goes down tonight? If true I have to wait until October?

Aerate the soil

deep water in middle of night or very early morning

use summer grass seed

use sulfate of ammonia (greens up the lawns)

cut grass frequently to stimulate growth but

don't cut the grass too short

Hi there, me again, the originator of the post. Well, it's been like a year now and my front yard grass is doing great. That icky moldy looking stuff in actuality was dead winter rye grass. I always knew to scalp it down in advance of applying winter grass but yeah, stupid me, I didn't didn't scalp it way down AFTER the winter grass is gone ALSO, around March April for example when it starts getting warm and the winter stuff dies. When it dies, it must be scalped down and gotten rid of. I simply mowed at the lowest level, bagging the clippings, for about 3 weeks in a row getting all of that dead looking stuff out of there. After that I raised it one notch but it is still pretty low. Another thing I did is, since there wasn't alot of growth at that point but it was greening up bigtime, I mowed WITHOUT the bag catcher. I read on a website that the clippings act as fertilizer and kind of sunscreen the grass in a way. Lately, it is green and lush and if grows at too good a a rate, ya have to bag the grass clippings so I do. Some weeks, if there isn't much growth and I mowing just to kind of clean it up, I mow with no grass catcher and fertilize, seems like the grass likes not having clippings bagged sometimes.

Also, I think there is seed in the fluffy looking tips of the grass before mowing, another reason I like to not bag periodically.
