Thanks AZJOED for the info! Hopefully I can touch base with a realtor here soon and get some more information on those units. I only saw two in an mls search and both appeared to be short sales, so you seem to be right about availability/turnover.

SoonerGirl - I separated in 2005 from the USAF, but continue working close with the military providing comms. Great job and have spent over 2 years out here with some of the best people you'd ever meet. Everyone is appreciative of the support back home. Thank you!

also, think about living in a medium-long term extended-stay style hotel for a month or so when you first arrive, so you can look around before committing to a place that may not work out later.....[/quote]

My husband also works at GD and we just moved here from IN.

He moved out first and we had a hard time finding quality short term housing with phone and internet included. We took a risk on a condo we found on Craigs List with a real estate investor and it turned out to be a very nice condo and the owner was very easy to work with, and is part of a real estate investment group. Apparently there are many swindlers on Craigs List but we got lucky.

If you have any interest in going this route, feel free to DM me and I can give you this investors info.

We are in Gilbert, as we have children and its a good family area. My two cents, the drive from Tempe to S Scottsdale is just fine ( I came out once when he was in a hotel in Tempe), and its close to the greenway for walking, Sky Harbor, and ASU if you have any interest in further education. Plus it seemed fun to be by all the college nightlife, not that we went but you might! It seems to me that Tempe may be a better bet for investment than S Scottsdale, but I am a newbie so take with grain of salt.

Good luck in your journey!

Thank you Hart4July On that note, searching through Tempe a bit, anyone have insight on the following two communities there?

VILLAGIO AT TEMPE

ABBEY LANE

Knowing that my primary residence might be in downtown Scottsdale or Tempe, I would think that appreciation value on a place should be greater in downtown Scottsdale, no?

Thanks again everyone for your feedback... greatly appreciated!

I've been gone for a few days ans saw the stuff here since my last post....

I hope USAA helps you out...they are THE BEST and I'm lucky to also be able to use them....

DT Scotts will have good appreciation potential, but you'll pay a premium for that address and appreciation may be slow for the next few years (everywhere).....

gotta get a good realtor who knows the areas well....I'd guess anybody USAA recommends would be good....this short sale/foreclosure thing requires patience....check recent "comps" for where you're looking....

I don't know anything about your two Tempe places
