Thanks in advance for your help.

I am planning to move to phoenix 85032 area and looking for a elementary school for 3 and half years old son with special needs (autism - speech delay). Greatly appreciate it if any one can provide any information to find out a good school for cases like ours.

Thanks a lot.

These links may help in finding more information about schooling and your needs. I know that Az state government has cut back on funding for public schools and especially the kids in need of help. You might want to contact the Paradise Valley Unified School District for that zip code area. I’ve added a google link to help with that.

PV district has some pretty good autism programs, but they have different programs at various schools and finding the right program is always the key and they only handle K->12. For a 3 1/2 yrs old, you will want to contact DDD and get assistance for early intervention programs and information about private programs available for younger kids.

There is a great yahoo autism group for the Phoenix area:

Default You're in the right place!

You look like you are smack in the middle of PVUSD, which is where my oldest went to preschool for kids with developmental delays.

When you get here, the first thing you are going to want to do is contact DDD. They will assign you a support coordinator and get you going. The bad news is, the state won't pay for jack because of all the cuts, but you do need to be DDD-eligible to get the Long-term care services. So, definitely apply.

https://app.azdes.gov/ddd/Eligibilit...uirements.aspx

They won't tell you this, but your little one is in the right age range for a habilitation program where he could get up to 35 hours a week of hab. Contact Diana Davis at HOPE Group for more information. She can steer you in the right direction.

Also, you will want to apply for ALTCS as soon as you can. If you sign up for the yahoo support group PhoenixAutismSupport or contact the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center, (SARRC) there is a fabulous woman there named Janet Kirwan. She has been a true blessing of guidance for many families.

The Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center | SARRC

SARRC also has additional programs and guidance for parents in the area.

Now to answer the question you actually asked , Paradise Valley school district does have developmental preschool. Sometimes they are in autism-only preschool, sometimes with typical peers. I am sure you can make your stand during the development of your IEP.

My older child was in an autism only preschool class and it was perfect for him. He absolutely loved it. They had it at Roadrunner Elementary/Cholla Complex.

Good luck to you! If you need any suggestions about developmental pediatricians or anything, just drop me a message!

Hi there: I am a support coordinator for DDD. Your child is past the age for Early Intervention, but still eligible for help thru DDD (the Division for Developmental Disabilities). When yu go tothe web page listed above, www.azdes.gov/ddd then choose "am i eligible?" and you can fill in the application on line. Don't waste time with early intervention. Its for kids birth to 3. Once in DDD, your support coor. will do the app for Long Term Care, which will get you the services you need for autism. You can't really choose a school unless you go charter, or private. Each public school district has programs in various schools and they tell you where your special needs child will go. good luck and message me if you have more questions.

The support coordinators my children had did not apply for ALTCS for our family. We had to handle that ourselves both times. Too bad you weren't our support coordinator! *LOL*
