Hi everyone,

I am moving the PHX in January and I am wondering if there are many jobs for security guards in the city. Where I live, you can find security guards I'm many places from banks to shopping centers, and with my experience and education I shouldn't have much of a problem landing a job with a company if there are jobs available.

Anyone know if PHX PD is hiring? I have an associates in criminal justice and might look into that as well.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

With the high amount of crime in Phoenix there are tons of security guard jobs. I worked security in Phoenix a few years ago. However, I do not know if Phoenix PD is hiring.

Well it looks like my prospects are pretty good then. Do security guards in Arizona have to buy a license from the state like we do here in WI?

Yes, you have to get a license whether you are armed or not. I cannot remember how much it was, but it was just under $100 for 5 years so it is nothing to worry about.

Security guard jobs have a high turnover, so they are not hard to get.

I would not count on any PD jobs right now in the metro area. Phx PD avoided layoffs recently, I don't think they are hiring.

My guess is no.

I heard some private security companies actually get you to work on a temporary guard card while you complete the state "powers to arrest" type training, then this of course is deducted from pay.

CA used to do that, but now you've got to have your permanent guard-card before you're even allowed to work a post.

Anywho, I've been wondering these same things since AZ is one of the areas on my "to move to" list.

Yes you need a guard card if you're going to be working with an outside security company, but not for in-house security. There's a lot of companies out here, some good, some bad, I've had great experiences with Anderson Security in the past. Their people are always professional, congenial and well-trained. I'd definitely give them a holler first.

I recently took a job as a security guard with no security or military experience. There's no way you would have trouble getting a job. But if you're looking for a higher level job that would be armed then I'm not sure. I know nothing about those jobs. But if you want a basic security position to get some cash or your foot in the door you should have no problems.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I've been doing security work for over a year and right now I work for a large national company so I figure just about any company that needs guards would take me. It's not a dream job, but I gotta make money somehow
