If you are looking for African Americans in Mesa visit a few LDS churches.....they will stand out there and be easy to spot....

South Phoenix is what you're looking for.

Sportsman's Social Club at 943 W Watkins Street
Elks Lodge 1007 S 7th Ave
The Legion 1624 E Broadway
AmVets 3805 S 16th Street

These are semi hole-in-the-wall places and more than a little dangerous.

Really? Are you an actual pastor or is this just a "clever" screen name? The o/p asked for advice and help, not snarky bigoted cheap shots. If you are a pastor, shame on you. And, no, I am not LDS.

So why would you "advise" a college student to check out places that are "more than a little dangerous?"

Sorry....it was a little snarky...and i apologize for that...
The truth is that you still find very few African Americans in the LDS population....and that is primarily because of their past history.
However it looks like the LDS church has pretty much put that behind them and for that I commend them.

it was a poor attempt at a joke.

But...I do remember attending an outside Drama in the Palo Duro canyon of Texas and looking up above us there was about 2-300 Mormon missionaries that were attending together.
And in that sea of white shirts, black ties and white faces...there was one lone young Black Mormon Elder....and brother did he stand out.

Struck me as a little humorous at the time.

Again...sorry for the stupid joke...I certainly did not mean to be offensive toward African Americans or LDS folks...and if you were offended please accept my apology.

I thought your joke was funny.

The whole Mormons think black people have the "mark if Cain" and Mesa is full of Mormans. Hhahaha
The LDS only fully accepted (so they say) Black people in the late 70's.

Wow Pastor - three apologies rapid-fire! Sometimes the PC-ness of this place gets to me.

As far as the places I mentioned being more than a little dangerous...it was a caveat, nothing more. He/she can check out the places or not. I'd recommend a Scottsdale based book group if I knew of one, but I don't, and the Phoenix chapter of the African-American hypenated-all-inclusive, anti-exclusive philanthropic charitable society had a waiting list last time I read their newsletter.

Anyhow - geographically speaking, south Phoenix is 'more than a little dangerous,' wouldn't you agree?

You'll see that another poster recommended the same areas of S. Phoenix as well.

I'm the very last person anyone would ever accuse of being p-c, trust me. But a jack@ss comment is a jack@ss comment. The o/p is college age, new to the area, and asked a sincere question. Scoring cheap shots is hardly neighborly. Have a nice day.

Everyone has their off days. The tricky part is when you identify yourself as a pastor, then you "up the ante" when you have those off days. Take care!
