We are currently living separately (him in Tempe 5 minutes from work and her in Surprise 20 minutes from work), but are moving in together, soon! We are trying to find a location (house, not apartment) that is a fair commute for both of us. So far we have found a house in avondale, but it seems far for his commute. He works 7:30 - 5 M - Th, but her hours are more flexible. Any suggestions on locations that are safe and nice that is a reasonable commute for both? Thanks for any input!

Sounds like you found the best compromise already in Avondale. Any further east and you get into the crappy parts of west Phoenix. If you go to the nearest part of the east valley like Ahwatukee you will have a very bad commute to Buckeye. It could be worse. He could work in East Mesa.

Thanks, Ponderosa. We looked in Central Phoenix this weekend and found some nice, small pockets, but didn't like the prospect of walking 2 blocks and being in a bad area.

FWIW, my neighbors work in Tempe and do the commute every day. We are in Goodyear and further away than Avondale. They don't like it, but do like living where they do. I guess you have to figure that - being in the kind of environment you like - into your equation.

Agreed ~ work to live, not live to work.

Have you thought of Maricopa? They seem to be giving away newer homes out there. I haven't checked a map, but maybe there is a quick back way to Buckeye from there.

Plus, have you considered how long each of you might have your jobs? And number one for me would be traffic, thus I would choose the place where the one with the long drive is going opposite of the rush our traffic.

I suggest looking at a map before you consult.

Maricopa to Buckeye is about 75 miles

OP your best bet would be in Central Phoenix near I-10. That will give you a balance between the 2 areas and easy access to the freeway.
