How many major airlines (if any) do you forsee coming to Williams Gateway (oh wait, it might soon be Phoenix-Mesa Gateway) by 2026? Will Southwest? United? If not these, which airlines and why?

Although PHX Sky Harbor has made some expansion (and demolition - terminal 2) plans, it certainly won't meet demand in the near future. How soon until it approaches capacity?

What will our brave leaders do? My guess is that regional air travel will grind to a halt within 20 years. Phoenix, thanks to the NIMBY mentality, won't act until the inevitable is upon us.

I'm more optimistic. The City of Phoenix recently decided to become a partner in Williams Gateway rather than fighting it. Phoenix sees passenger service at Williams Gateway as a critical reliever for Sky Harbor, which is a remarkably effective airport given its in-town location. 2026 isn't that far way, so at that point, I still see Sky Harbor as the area's principal airport with the most nonstop flights across the country and to international destinations. Williams Gateway, however, should offer an array of short and medium length flights to regional destinations such as Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and even Chicago. Those flights will serve East Valley residents who don't wish to come all the way into Central Phoenix to catch a flight and will keep capacity available at Sky Harbor as it continues to grow.

I believe Williams-Gateway will be a compliment to Sky Harbor to create convenience for people on the east side of the valley so they won't have to drive 30-40 miles from Apache Junction to Sky Harbor. In 20 years, I see a reduction in air travel, so I don't think we'll see PHX turning into O' Hare West!

I do believe, however, that in 20 years, it'll accomodate all the airlines that operate out of Sky Harbor.
