In my neighborhood, the sidewalks are very wide. People use it as a parking lot, and park completely on the sidewalk. Police don't care about anything other than their ego (and donuts!).

An old neighbor of mine had a son with a huge F-350 with big tires and mufflers - he would always park the wrong way and on half the sidewalk. I often times went for walks and *accidentally* bumped into the side-view mirror once or twice.

At my old house (in NV) I had called the cops because of the neighbor kid parking on the sidewalk but they never did anything.

At my current house there's about 5 feet of grass between the sidewalk and the street so fortunately it's not a problem.

I've been in Phoenix for 2 weeks now and I can't believe how people block the sidewalks in my neighborhood. I've lived in Indiana, Michigan, New York and California, and have never seen anything like this. I've always had sidewalk laws. I thought surely Phoenix had one, too. But judging from your comments, it sounds as if some citizens just don't obey it and they get away with it.

There are vehicles in my neighborhood that completely take up the sidewalk (all the way to the yard). Some only half way. Yet our streets are wider than I've ever had in my neighborhood.

And I've noticed that all the trash containers are set on the sidewalks, as well. (I back to an alley, so I don't have a container.) These block a good portion of the sidewalks, too, especially for a walker with 2 dogs. I just moved from San Jose, where there are very strict rules about where you place your trash bin. It had to be at least 2 feet from the curb and 5 feet from your recycling bin. Guess that's not the case here. Glad I'm renting and didn't buy!

Thanks for the great information, everyone.

Additionally, I think it's also illegal to park more than 18 inches from the curb!

So when you called them and pointed out the violations what was their explanation for not doing anything?

We live in an HOA, are ALLOWED to park on the street, have huge driveways, yet an idiot down the street always parks his truck on the sidewalk. When walking your dog, you must walk around the darn thing. I think he does this for spite, I mean why else would he do it?

What are we talking about here?
  1. Parking in the driveway with part of the vehicle blocking the sidewalk -or-
  2. Parking on the street with wheels up on the sidewalk

We get a lot of 1) in our neighborhood but none of 2) since the sidewalk and the street are separated. In most neighborhoods I have seen in the Valley, the sidewalk is right next to the street.
