Here's another breakdown from the same report, this time on cities. Phoenix is 134, Surprise 372. Burbs are better.

I'm a little skeptical about these stats ... especially when metro areas like New York and Washington, DC rank very low in the crime ratings (even lower than Phoenix). DC has been long known as the nation's murder capital, so what are they basing this data on? Could it be the entire metro region, which includes many suburban and exurban outlying areas that tend to be lower in crime stats?

These ones included motor vehicle theft. How much of that goes on in NY where people live in high rise tenements and don't drive compared to PHX where there are cars, cars, everywhere. I bet if you took car theft out, PHX would be much lower than it is.

To my knowledge DC has never been the murder capital in actual numbers or per capita (at least not in recent years). That distinction has been passed along between Detroit, St Louis and Camden, NJ. Also, these stats encompass all types of violent crime. New York City as changed drastically over the last 15 years. Crime is way down but I've heard some rumblings that a lot of things my be kept a bit hush, hush.

Phoenix will also get some extra stats from activities pertaining to drug smuggling and people smuggling (drop houses and such).

Still, the numbers aren't bad when you factor in how some people in this forum and in general view Phoenix.

The crime there has been going down steadily since 2008. Despite all the kidnappings and beheadings. ha ha Just keep some tape on Jan and Joes mouth and you'll be great. lol I guess Phoenix won't have to call in the national guard after all. Nice to see a good rep coming back.
I think it's time for a law that prohibits public officials from speaking publicly would do the city good. lol

In the city rankings: Boston is 113 and Phoenix is 135 (higher is better).

The same survey was published as city by city and metro. I think city by city is more useful. I posted the link earlier, but here it is again.

http://os.cqpress.com/citycrime/2010..._hightolow.pdf

This survey only looked at cities over 75K population. So if your town is not there it is either not in the worst 400 or is under 75K.

Oh, I thought higher up from the national average was higher crime from the national average. lol
Then national average, then under national average, with () was below national average. My bad. So for Boston at (.52) I thought they were under the national average. I thought Phoenix was 10.26 over the national average. Hard to figure out that list. lol At the bottom of the lists it says that about the national averages and it being below or above. Confusing.
