Hi,

I am a single, African American professional (work for the fed govt.) female looking for a change of venue. I currently live in Virginia Beach (went to college in the Hampton Roads area) But I am looking for a change, I've heard that Phoenix is a great place. But I would love to get some feedback from residents about what it is really like there.

I am looking to move in March 2012 and will be renting the first couple of months, not looking to pay more than 700-800 a month for apt. What are some great neighborhoods? How is Scottsdale?

Quick Background

Orginally from NYC, but lived in Va for last 10 years, bored here, no real nightlife, major sports teams,(How is Phoenix)?

How is the job market for fed employ, state gov work, or non-profit?

What is the social scene really like, any good indications for single women looking to settle down in the next few years?

How is the cultural set-up as far as neighborhoods, salons, civic/cultural events, (i.e. Sorority,Urban League, political commitees)?

Any helpful and positive feedback would be great

I would look into Seattle, just saying, if your move is still up in the open. it is cheaper than NYC, SF, Chicago, L.A., Boston but has all the great amenities of these bigger cities w/out their price tags or crime-stats. No driving required in the city, lots of energy and night life. A LOT OF YOUNG (URBAN) PROFESSIONALS that you won't get in PHX and there not all one kind- like here. If your goal is to buy a track-home, marry a beer gutted misogynist and have a few unhappy kids then YA PHX but if you looking into enjoying life and either living fast or slow- in the same week and have a great social life w/ open minded, intelligent people in your price range in a nice apartment in the heart of a vibrant city w/ gorgeous views and great bars, restaurants, art, unique shopping then look else where, like Seattle.

If you want to PM I can answer specific ?s. I would hate for someone to be mislead and decide on PHX when it makes so many people miserable. Good luck

Is this another bash on Phoenix or an advertisement from the Seattle chamber of commerce?

To the op, ignore posters like these, there is plenty to see and do in and around Phoenix, not on the same scale as New York but still enough to suit what you're asking about.

Nightlife can be found mostly Friday nights and weekends and concentrated in Tempe or old town Scottsdale. Downtown Phoenix is better than what it used to be but nightlife is more limited.

Lots of chances to meet other single people if you hit the right areas, the great weather here brings people out of their homes more than in cities that have bad weather.

Phoenix has professional sports, all four franchises in MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, and it's a major area for spring training and college championship bowl games.

There may not be much to find in political or cultural events, Phoenix is such a new city that doesn't have a lot of culture or history, and it's generally more conservative than New York.

Government jobs are available but may be more limited because of so many cutbacks recently.

Hope that helps.

PHX is a great place to live for AA's in my opinion. It's still "new" enough that the opportunities are what you make them. I moved from MI 4 years ago and haven't looked back. Feel free to PM me for additional details

You'll probably only get good information if you bump every thread about black females moving to Phoenix that have been created within the past 5 years.

I would suggest starting a new thread that way posters can reply to your initial questions and the OP might have already made their decision at this point.
