I agree that our odds may be better, but we should guard against sounding or feeling smug.

I'm currently in MN (soon on a plane to AZ). The media has a way of exaggerating e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. When the bridge dropped in MN, I got 10 calls asking if I was o.k. While I appreciated their concern, they obviously didn't take statistics. One bridge dropped and there are 10's of thousands of bridges in MN. Statistically I was going to be fine.

So I don't feel one bit concerned over some tornadoes that landed in MN (and yes there was some damage). By far, the bigger concern that affects me is hail. I had hail damage twice in the past two years.

So I personally am celebrating the fact that my insurance is $600 for my home in Arizona while it is $1800 in MN (same size home). the reason: HAIL! I'm not one bit concerned over a tornado. I'm not so sure I'd be saying the same thing in Oklahoma. But in the Midwest, tornado's statistically are just not a problem.

We need some sun in MN as well. Solution: I'm heading to AZ!

But in fairness, will you take 2 weeks of dust storms and monsoons in August or two weeks of rain in MA?? I'll take the rain thank you.

[mod cut-- response to deleted posts] yes, there is terrible heartache casued by the weather. This year has been particulary brutal. I can't imagine living through these tornadoes and massive floods.
