Hello,
My family and I are relocating and I am curious how long after we live in AZ do we have to get new tags/registration? Not sure how to go about this....any help please!!
Also, we are staying with family until we buy a home.

Thanks,

If you move here intending to stay here, you should get it done when you get here. You could theoretically wait until you have a more permanent address, but the law doesn't say that, and it's easy to change your address on your registration once you get it. If you end up staying with family for a prolonged period, you could get reported for living here with out of state plates.

As far as I know you have to live here most of the year. In fact Arizona is about as lax on this as anywhere I have ever lived. If you have children in school or are permanently employed and have been here over 6 months would be my take. More likely your tags from wherever you are coming from will run out first

From the AZ MVD:
Motor Vehicle Division

Resident Definition

State law requires that you obtain an Arizona vehicle registration and driver license, immediately if any of the following applies. If you:
  • Work in Arizona (other than for seasonal agricultural work) –or–
  • Are registered to vote in Arizona –or–
  • Place children in school without paying the tuition rate of a nonresident –or–
  • Have a business that has an office in Arizona, and that bases and operates vehicles in this state –or–
  • Obtain a state license or pay school tuition fees at the same rate as an Arizona resident –or–
  • Have a business that operates vehicles to transport goods or passengers within Arizona –or–
  • Remain in Arizona for a total of 7 months or more during any calendar year, regardless of your permanent residence.
Out-of-state students enrolled with 7 or more semester hours, are not considered Arizona residents, regardless of employment.

As was stated in another post, neighbors can report a vehicle if they know they meet the above requirements but are not registering their vehicle.

You can renew for one year or two. If your car requires emission testing, you can only renew for two years in the year that you get the test done, as those are required every other year.

Don't know if they still do it, but the cops in the Phoenix area used to do license plate enforcement the first week of school. They would park next to various schools and pull over anyone with out of state plates that just dropped off a kid at the school.
