Does anyone know how Surprise got it's name? I was wondering if there is a significant reason.

From Wikipedia: Surprise, AZ

History

The city was founded in 1938 by Flora Mae Statler, who named it Surprise as she "would be surprised if the town ever amounted to much".[3] Surprise officials previously thought the city was founded by Statler's husband, real estate developer and state legislator Homer C. Ludden, but in 2010 property records were discovered which listed Statler owning the land before she met Ludden

You are a little off on your history.

She actually said she "would be Surprised" if they ever had a nightclub in the area. It's 2011 with 105,000 people and there still no nightclub (only a Irish pub with live music and all you can eat fish and chips on Friday night).

You might very well be correct. I just did a cut and paste from what I found in Wikipedia. As we all know, Wiki isn't always the final authority.
