Is auto registration very expensive in AZ? I have heard some stories, and don't know if they are true...

Thanks,
Petra

I don't think it's that expensive (maybe I'm used to it), but I hear it's much more than a lot of states that have a flat rate for all cars. I believe it's about 2% of the current value of the car per year. So, a $30k car would cost $600 that year. It goes down every year as the value of the vehicle goes down.

Well, I got a 04 Silverado current retail is around 20K.
I paid $284 for registration last year in CA, when I registered in June, they gave me the option of $265 per year or $478 for two years so I don't think the registration costs more in AZ or may be just in my case it didn't...

Define "expensive", Petra

From my experience, Arizona registrations are less than ONE FOURTH of California's.

Does that help?

My plates last year in Michigan were $110, when I registered here they were $430 on a 2006 Colorado. Seemed expensive to me.

The title of the thread Auto Registration... Hmmm.. does that mean your car gets registered Automatically every year?

Okay, before Bummer tells me to go to my room, I'll answer the question. It depends on the age and the type of the vehicle. The older it gets, the cheaper the registration fees get.

If you have a 1982 beater that runs and CAN pass emissions, registration is around $20. One thing you should know, older cars don't stay very long in Maricopa country due to stricter emission controls. Generally, when cars get over 10 years old, people don't want to spend a lot of money on them to fix emission problems, so they end up getting rid of them. The fact is, cars that are older than 10 years and run fine and meet the emission standards of 10 years ago, may not necessarily be acceptable in Maricopa County today because of the stricter emissions, so the MVD forces Maricopa County residents to get rid of their older vehicles to reduce the pollution.

The car manufacturers should do something about this, forcing people indirectly to renew their car leads me to believe there is some sort of a conspiracy! Besides isn't there a limit here on how much a person has to spent on their car repair before becoming excempt for emissions?

One Fourth of CA? I dunno 'but registration being that much cheaper here! The figures I gave were accurate and real, it was cheaper than CA but about 10% not 75%+...

I paid $14 to register my 79 blazer, and about 58 to register my 95 accord.

Ok, here are the "hard figures" backing my earlier post, TurcoLoco

When I relocated here about ten years ago, my '87 Chevy Silverado Pick-Up (about 10 years old at the time) cost me just shy of $500 to register in California and the following year here is was about $50. Granted, it was one year older but I would still call that CONSIDERABLY CHEAPER.

Something else to consider, my insurance for the same vehicle with the same coverage dropped in half.

Needless to say . . . I WAS ELATED.
