Sorry, no advice here. I would stay in SD. I think the places you are looking at for $65K are not in the nicest areas, though.

Well I'd prefer to work as a Medical Assistant. I'm just ready for a change! being that Arizona is close to California, I may apply for jobs and see about getting interviews. It would be a vast difference going from $17 an hour as a receptionist to $12-$13 an hour in AZ. But from my understanding it is cheaper. My main reason for wanting to re-locate is because I cannot afford to purchase a home in California. I heard great things about Chandler too. But for some reason I hear Mesa calling me. Thank you for your suggestion/comments.
I'd take an apartment by the beach in SD over my big house in Gilbert any day if I could convince hubby to move there.

Yes, I do love making $17 an hour but I'm tired of living in a 1 bedroom apartment and having to still struggle. I just feel like I will never be able to own a home here. I do not want to pay on a mortgage for the rest of my life. I see in Phoenix decent starter homes go for under $65k. I guess what my plan is now, is to apply for some jobs and hopefully get an interview and drive up there. I would not move without a job in place. What part of Phoenix is safe, clean and affordable? Thanks!
Yeah, I think you hit on something that the cost-of-living calculators I mentioned before don't take into account. In housing markets like Southern California, there is no such thing as a starter home or a "point of entry," which ensures that everyone who doesn't make six figures must rent forever. I lived in L.A for 15 years and couldn't afford a place the size of a broom closet in the San Fernando Valley.

You will find that Phoenix is a middle class paradise compared to SD.
Apartments and housing here are not priced like an expensive privilege as they are in SD.
Believe it or not wages for trained medical tech personnel such as yourself are slightly better.
You may find yourself pleasantly surprised.
Also you will net about 4% more on your paycheck.
Hope this helps.
