You didn't really say what part of Phoenix you were coming to. It's a large metropolitan area. You might want to map out some of the excellent suggestions. Unless you want to drive 20-25 miles; you might want to pick something more Central (i.e. downtown). Encanto Park is the home of the Enchanted ISland. It has about 15 rides for kids (some specifically for your son) and late August might be cool enough - cool little train ride too. They have a nice water feature too for walking through. There is a hotel near the Arizona Mall (for mom and dad) that has a Rainforest Cafe and a walk through Aquarium at the mall, too. The hotel has some very nice water features; don't forget to wear sunscreen and watch your children around water!!

There is also Kumon. They can develop their math skills and have fun at the same time. Learning is fun for many youngsters and it's often overlooked.
