Man I wish we could have grass like this year round here in Phoenix, looks so much better than the summer Bermuda stuff, though I guess we should be thankful any kind of grass grows here at all in the summers.

Looks nice, I'm behind as I just planted ours today. I hope it will get going before it cools down too much.

beautiful! and you have a lovely backyard. we are renting a condo right now as we just moved here. I cannot wait to have a backyard again!

Currently, the condos are apparently trying to get the grass to grow here. they have reseeded and now the sprinklers (very aggressive ones) pop on all day long. Hopefully you aren't headed to the car when they come on suddenly. Yesterday we got soaked even with running.

I was always told by my grandfather and my mom, both avid gardeners that watering during the heat of the day burns the grass and watering early in the morning or after the sun is off the grass is best. Is it different here? I see sprinklers on all day all over the place here since October hit.

You have to keep the seed damp to get it to germinate and that can be a challenge with the dry days and intense sun of early fall. They will cut way back on waterings once the grass is established.

Hx Guy,

Your backyard is gorgeous, well done! My backyard is still pretty much a blank slate because I can't make up my mind regarding the design. I probably need to just sit down and sketch it out. And then I really need to consider the trees, especially because the ones I tend to like are all a bit more fussy than the norm...so I can't just stick a tree in the ground and hope for the best. Some like a little more shade or drainage, or require a mate for fruit to develop! Fussy critters!

I put my rye seed out 2 weeks ago...but while some of it looks great, there are some bad patches here and there that I'm attributing to:

1) the Bermuda grass doesn't want to go dormant just yet
2) dry spots that the sprinkler might have missed
3) spots where I missed putting seeds down! Oops!

So, this morning I got up earlier and sprinkled some extra seed in the patchy bits, covered with a bit of top soil, and then watered with a hose. Keeping my fingers crossed...need just a couple more days of heat to hatch the seedlings! Hope mine looks as nice as yours someday!

That looks great! We had ours done a couple of weeks ago when it first got a bit cooler, but when it got hotter again, the Bermuda started coming up again instead with just patches of winter rye. Our landscaper was here scalping and seeding it again today, so hopefully the coming cool nights will help.

I'm thinking now we should have had it done earlier. Yours looks so nice. When did you have it overseeded?

For those who are getting the "blend" of rye/bermuda....fret not...common problem with me every year, but once it cools down the rye WILL take over and it will all fill in...just takes a bit longer...its not like planting a new lawn - the Bermuda has survival instincts and tries to hang on!

I never "re-do" mine and by Thanksgiving everything is always fine....

We have an ancient lawn that is more of a "salad" with common Bermuda, St. Augustine and Fescue involved. The winter Rye tends to have the biggest problems where the Bermuda was the strongest. In the back yard where a Sissoo tree provides an increasing amount of shade each year, the Bermuda has had a rough time of it this summer and as a result, we got an impressive crop of Rye that came up in less than a week after seeding in that area.
