The peanut butter I buy was the same yesterday as weeks before. No difference, but it did go up a bit about 2 months ago. Walnuts were 9.00 pound/loose ones--now that's high!!

This is just a symptom of the 'new economy'. Someone figured out that people are willing to pay more for peanut butter for their children, so that's the new reality. The price will stay high until people are too poor to afford it. Don't expect a drop in peanut butter prices- the peanut growers will demand that the government pay them for any peanut over-harvests.

That's not really how it works, in my opinion.

Buy almond butter. Some Costcos sell a large jar for under $6.

They didn't change the way they make it or anything, why would you expect it to be any different?

Almonds went up in price too, it's a shame.

Today's price check at Safeway: $ .21/ounce for Jif & Skippy. That made the large, 40 oz. jars $8.40. (I didn't buy any, but wanted to check the price.)

I like chunky peanut butter & i have 3 16 oz jars (2 creamy & 1 chunky). That should last me awhile but i do make no bake oatmeal/peanut butter cookies so im not sure how long it will last. I wont pay high prices for it though. As long as people pay for the high priced peanut butter the prices will continue to climb. Its discusting & i wont buy it. Look at how much groceries are incl milk, eggs & bread. WTF !!!!

Heh, I took Phoenix Lady's remark to mean THE PRICE was the same as weeks before.

It really isn't that evil corp. America is just raising prices to stick it to the little guy. Groceries are actually a very low profit margin business. The 10 year median profit margin for major grocery chains is 1.7%. That means for each $1 you spend, they earn <2 cents. The rest goes to cover their costs. For the biggest food producers, their profit is 7 cents on the dollar, 5 cents in recession. Better, but still hardly a license to steal.
