I've seen many posts stating that Arizona, and PHX specifically, have more than their fair share of "rude, fake, plastic, pretentious" people.

I'm just curious to know what specific incidents you've had that have lead many of you to these conclusions. They must happen regularly, right?

Anyway, I'm just curious if there are things that happen all the time or if you've only had a few bad experiences.

Thanks.

I dont live in Phoenix or any of the other bigger cities. Im a simple country girl who lives in a smaller town but my own experiences show that its two different worlds out there.
Im more famaliar with areas where the hospitaity is down home. The good ol' boy attitudes. People stop at red lights. Pedestrians actually have the right of way in a crosswalk. Its not about who drives the bigger car or shinier SUV.
Im not trying to impune Phoenix, or anywhere out in the Valley, per say, but by choice, the smaller town settings fit my lifestyle much better. A town of 25,000 people surely seem to get along better than a city with around a million, give or take. But its the elements that live there, that probably make lifestyles a little less comfortable, every time we go out there it seems we're always on edge, get the feeling we just dont 'blend in' with the lifestyles, cant seem to keep up with the flow of the high-speed lifestyle. Just from my own experiences.

I've had a lot of encounters with some really, really mean people here. For example, two separate times when I was bicycling (on the sidewalk of a major road, going with traffic) I've had people throw drinks at me from their moving car as they passed by. Yes, just like the movie The Weather Man. Don't laugh, it's not funny at all-- last year a city of Tempe worker was hit in the head by someone throwing an energy drink can-- and has permanent brain damage for the rest of his life. There is a lot of human trash here. However, I'll admit most people here are just fine and fairly friendly. It's just that the trash here is REALLY bad.

You're going to see rude and nice people no matter where you go, they're not confined to certain areas. I'm one of the "courteous" people in Phoenix, and I rarely see rude ones, but that depends on your interpretation of "rude", and how much tolerance or patience you have towards others.

I don't see that many rude people, a few, but not that often. I think it is a growing problem across the states.

I used to live in Phoenix and still have some fond memories despite the growing negatives that finally caused me to leave.

One of those negatives was the intolerable amount of road rage in the metro area. When you're driving down those wide boulevards and looking for an address it seems normal to me to ride in the right or slow lane, and slow down to be able to make your right turn. I can't tell you how many times cars would pull up behind and blast their horns impatiently. And I'm not a bad or super cautious driver. Once a big SUV actually followed me into the parking lot blowing his horn, and circling my car threateningly before he drove off. Who needs this kind of behavior.

I was not surprised to learn recently than in some sort of road rage survey Phoenix ranked right up there with New York and Miami.

I think it's more an attitude of self absortion and a better than thou quality. Trust me I never liked NY and was happy to get out of there and still happy I did, but when I moved to Phoenix I noticed immediately there was some serious brain fry problems. I figured it was the heat.

I feel like I have blended into that society. I am part of the drive up and close the garage door crowd. I did however bring one of my new neighbors a pumpkin pie a few Thanksgivings ago and they opened the door said thank you and closed it. I'm not sure I expected anything more than that.

I visited last year and had no problems - most people were really nice.

Road Rage is very bad - the DC area certainly has it's share of bad/mad drivers too. Even where I live (small city of 30,000), there are some very rude drivers. I've never been followed though.

Sheesh. Be careful out there. I live in MD and run a lot - I've never had anything thrown @ me but I've been yelled at and given the finger on a few occassions .... usually by immature high school & college students though.

It is the human trash element in Phoenix, I dont know how to describe it, but it is very present in this metro area in particular. I had a black friend from Africa that was chased by a group of people, they had no intentions of hurting him though, they were just trying to "scare" him. I dont know how to explain, but I would say that, it is because Phoenix attracts a lot of "lowlives" from many parts of the country. Bikers, strippers, hookers, thugs, drug dealers, white supremacists, gang members, scam artists, ex cons. When they say that Phoenix is a "crap magnet", believe me, it is true! I would say second only to Las Vegas!!
