But what am I gonna do without the constant stream of ADT and Landscaper salesman offering to give me a good deal on things I don't need?

There is a thread on this board about things you shouldn't keep in your garage in the summer. I suppose you could lure them into your garage with an offer of free lemonade and them lock them in there. Although, after they've been in there a few months, the smell wouldn't be worth the bother, as I'm sure it isn't a good idea to keep solicitors in your garage all summer.

As a New Yorker hoping to move to the valley, I find the OP both amusing and a bit distressing. Any stranger at my door, at any time of day or night, for any reason, is considered a potential threat. I can work on evaluating the situation and possibly changing my mind, but a stranger at the door is just that, a stranger.

My two dogs (especially the shepherd) deter 99% of anyone that gets halfway up my driveway. They also make me feel better about my wife being at home alone. Between the unconditional love dogs give, and their willingness to protect their home (depending on the dog or breed) I will always have a dog.

Another thing to do is always stay in touch with your neighbors. Talk about what has been seen or anything that has been going on in the neighborhood. Good neighbors can watch out for each other, and that makes a huge difference.

Does anyone know of a Veterans group that paints your house number on the curb and also puts the flag on the painting?
I would love to get in touch with them.
